Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA)
On October 15, 1990 Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), this act is to aid thousands of individuals adversely affected by the mining, transport, and processing of uranium and the testing of nuclear weapons for the Nation’s Cold War arsenal. This act will compensate individuals who developed certain cancers and other serious diseases related to nuclear weapons testing and mining of uranium.
RESEP is dedicated to helping individuals who have a history of exposure to radiation. North Country Healthcare will medically screen (basic physical exam, urinalysis, blood work, and chest X-ray) any individual who resided in the following areas for 2 years between January 21, 1951 - October 31,1958 or during the month of July 1962:
* Apache
* Coconino
* Gila
* Mohave (north of the Grand Canyon)
* Navajo
* Yavapai
Who is eligible for a free* cancer screening?
Downwinders
* Any individual physically present in affected areas downwind of the NV test-sites
* Resident between Jan. 21, 1951 and Oct. 31, 1958 & June 30, 1962 - July 31, 1962
- A resident for at least two years
- Resident of certain counties in Utah, Nevada and Arizona
On-Site Participants
* Any individuals who participated on-site in a test involving atmospheric detonation
* Must have been "ON-SITE": Above or within the official boundaries of the Nevada, Pacific, Trinity, or South Atlantic Test Sites
Ore Transporters
* Employed in the transport of uranium ore or vanadium-uranium ore
* Beginning January 1, 1942 and ending December 31, 1971
* Employed at least one year
* Worked in certain counties of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, North Dakota, Oregon, and Texas
Uranium Miners
* Employed in an above-ground or underground mine
* Beginning January 1, 1942 and ending December 31, 1971
* Employed 40 or more Working Level Months (WLMs)
* Worked in certain counties of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, North Dakota, Oregon, and Texas
Uranium Millers
* Employed in a uranium mine
* Beginning January 1, 1942 and ending December 31,1971
* Employed at least one year
* Worked in certain counties of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, North Dakota, Oregon, and Texas

* Uranium Miners- $100,000
* Uranium Millers- $100,000
* Ore Transporters- $100,000
* Downwinders- $50,000
* On-Site Participants- $75,000

Miners
* Primary lung cancer
* Certain nonmalignant respiratory diseases
Millers
* Primary lung cancer
* Certain nonmalignant respiratory diseases
* Renal cancer
* Other chronic renal disease including nephritis and kidney tubal tissue injury
Ore Transporters
* Primary lung cancer
* Certain nonmalignant respiratory diseases
* Renal Cancer
* Other chronic renal disease including nephritis and kidney tubal tissue injury
Downwinders & On-Site Participants
* Leukemia (other than chronic lymphocytic leukemia)
* Lung cancer
* Multiple myeloma
* Lymphomas (other than Hodgkin’s Disease)
* Primary cancer of the: thyroid, male or female breast, esophagus, stomach, pharynx, small intestine, pancreas, bile ducts, gall bladder, salivary gland, urinary bladder, brain, colon, ovary, or liver (except if cirrhosis or Hepatitis B is indicated)

How do I schedule a screening?
Cancer screenings are scheduled appointments with a medical provider and are available at North Country Clinics.
