North Country Healthcare: A national health crisis

Sunday, December 5th 2010 Childhood obesity has emerged as a major health crisis. In the last 30 years, the percentage of overweight children has more than doubled and the incidence of weight-related health conditions previously observed only in adults has increased dramatically among children. In addition to the well-documented social and psychological problems experienced by overweight youth, research has shown that children and adolescents who are overweight are more likely to become overweight or obese adults; thus, predisposing them to an increased risk of premature death, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, osteoarthritis and other health problems.
