Why we need a public health plan option

Health care reform is a hot issue in Washington now. Efforts to produce a bill with bipartisan support are floundering, due to disagreements over whether there should be public plan option and how to pay for the reform. The public plan would create a new insurance plan administered and funded by federal or state government that would be offered along with private plans in a newly created health insurance exchange. It would collect premiums to pay for care, would have low administrative costs and, because of its size would have the ability to better control costs while also improving quality of care.
