RESEP - Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program (Downwinders)

Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA)

On October 15, 1990 Congress passed the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA), this act is to aid thousands of individuals adversely affected by the mining, transport, and processing of uranium and the testing of nuclear weapons for the Nation’s Cold War arsenal. This act will compensate individuals who developed certain cancers and other serious diseases related to nuclear weapons testing and mining of uranium.

Radiation Exposure Screening and Education Program-RESEP

RESEP is dedicated to helping individuals who have a history of exposure to radiation. North Country Healthcare will medically screen (basic physical exam, urinalysis, blood work, and chest X-ray) any individual who resided in the following areas for 2 years between January 21, 1951 - October 31,1958 or during the month of July 1962:

* Apache                           * Coconino

* Navajo                            * Yavapai

* Gila                                 * Mohave (north of the Grand Canyon)

Qualifying Individuals

* Ore Transporters                       * Onsite Participants

* Uranium Miners                         * Uranium Millers

* Downwinders (Areas of residence)

A claim can be filed with the US Department of Justice if certain eligibility and medical diagnosis have been made to receive compensation:

$100,000 for miners and millers

$50,000 for “downwinders.”

RECA claims can also be filed on a family member's behalf only if the deceased person lived in the above mention counties during the mentioned years and had certain cancers.
