Worlds AIDS Day-Red Ribbon Project
Worlds AIDS Day-Red Ribbon Project

Flagstaff, Ariz. – Health care workers and volunteers plan to place 1,000 red ribbons here and in other northern Arizona communities to draw attention to people living with AIDS. This regional red ribbon project is part of a global awareness campaign for World AIDS Day and is organized by the Grand Canyon Chapter of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC-GC). Nearly 800 people in northern Arizona have been diagnosed with HIV or AIDS. When the 20 percent of cases who are unaware of their infection are included, this number rises to 993. According to national estimates by the Centers for Disease Control, one in five people in the U.S. who are infected with HIV are unaware of their infection.

“We know that if we can identify the twenty percent of people who are not diagnosed, we can improve their health and help prevent the spread of the disease,” said Steve McCrosky, chapter president of ANAC-GC and HIV Specialty Nurse Practitioner at North County HealthCare.

On Saturday, December 1, members of ANAC; Change, a public health student group; and the NAU LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Ally) Task Force and others will head up the effort to place a ribbon for each person living with HIV/AIDS in northern Arizona. The 1,000 ribbons will be placed at several public sites across northern Arizona:

1. Flagstaff, at City Hall
2. Northern Arizona University, near student health services where HIV testing will be taking place
3. Prescott, at the World AIDS Day memorial service held by Northland Cares.
4. Kingman, at North Country HealthCare
5. Show Low, at a support group for PLWHA
6. Gallup, NM, at the first annual Navajo AIDS prevention conference

Some of the 1,000 ribbons will be placed in front of Flagstaff City Hall and near the Wall Aquatic Center on the NAU campus. Across the street at the NAU Health and Learning Center in the Health Promotions office, Coconino County Public Health Services District staff will be offering free confidential HIV testing on Friday, November 30 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. for anyone wishing to take the test.

“The continuous development of new and improved medical treatment both for HIV and the illnesses associated with it, has led to major changes in the pattern of HIV disease progression around the world,” said Dr. Joel Terriquez of the Shándíín Project at Flagstaff Medical Center. “Here in Arizona, there are other significant challenges, particularly within the Native American community and in certain smaller rural areas, where living with the stigma of HIV is still considered socially unacceptable and the understanding of disease is limited.”

The ribbons are handmade from recycled materials by volunteers. The ribbon project is intended to serve as a reminder to viewers and passersby to learn about their HIV status by requesting a HIV test from their health care provider. The CDC currently recommends that everybody from age 13 to 64 get at least one HIV test in their lifetime and more frequently if they are at higher risk for the disease. HIV is transmitted through sexual activity, sharing used syringes and from mother to child during pregnancy.

People diagnosed with HIV can now take medicine that greatly improves their quality of life and their chance of survival. Health care experts also now know that treating those with the infection reduces the spread of disease to others.

“A reminder to all of us in the U.S. is that while HIV is not impacting us as it once did, it remains an ongoing challenge in many other areas of the world,” said Laura Theimer, NAU LGBTQIA Task Force. “Apathy and silence could wake a ‘sleeping giant’ again here in the U.S. Prevention not only saves lives, it also saves money and resources.”

A related project for World AIDS Day is that ANAC-GC is donating two HIV prevention kits to the local group Flagstaff for Haiti. The kits include rapid HIV tests and medicines that can prevent an HIV infection in the event a person is exposed to HIV-infected blood. Flagstaff for Haiti provides surgical services in Haiti, a country with elevated rates of HIV.

“We really appreciate that ANAC has been able to provide the Post-exposure Protocol (PEP) medications to help reduce the risk among our volunteers as well as the staff in Haiti,” said Derek Bontrager, surgical technician at Flagstaff Medical Center and volunteer with Flagstaff for Haiti. “It is a great collaboration between the different health care groups in the Flagstaff community and adds an extra layer of protection for the folks providing care in this higher risk population.”

Despite worldwide and concerted efforts over the years to bring attention to the disease, many people are unaware of their HIV status. As more individuals are diagnosed and get into treatment, more people will survive this disease and the spread of the disease will be somewhat checked and able to spread more slowly.

“AIDS is an important and preventable part of life and more importantly public health,” said Caitlin McCollow, public health student and leader of NAU Change Club. “It’s something that we, as future public health professionals, will be dealing with for a long time.”

Nurses in AIDS Care-Grand Canyon Chapter research shows there are nearly 1,000 (993) cases of HIV in northern Arizona. ANAC-GC focuses on rural HIV care with special emphasis on providing clinical HIV education, building connections between regional HIV health care workers, and serving as a resource for current HIV information. Research by ANAC-GC also comes from Arizona Department of Health Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Visit www.grandcanyonnursesinaidscare.org for more information.

North Country HealthCare Goes Tobacco Free

The policy will go into effect at all of its locations in 13 communities and will affect employees, medical staff, students, patients, volunteers, visitors and subcontractors. The new policy will prohibit the use of all tobacco products and electronic smoking devices. Tobacco use will not be permitted anywhere on any of their campuses, including entrances, patios, walkways and parking lots.

As a responsible leader in the healthcare industry, North Country HealthCare wishes to protect its patients, visitors, and staff members from the harmful effects of smoking and other tobacco products.

North Country is committed to providing a safe, clean, and healthy environment for its patients and staff, as well as promoting health, wellness, prevention, and the treatment of diseases within the communities it serves. North Country will act as a model for the community by promoting the good health of their staff and influencing public attitudes about the use of tobacco.

To prepare for the tobacco-free policy, North Country organized a committee of employees and community stakeholders consisting of current smokers, former smokers and non-smokers. “We wanted to be considerate and thoughtful in the design of this policy and be aware of the difficult change for some of our staff members, patients, and visitors,” said David Bianco, Director of Human Resources. “We are committed to supporting efforts towards cessation by conducting ongoing programs designed to assist staff in adhering to this policy.”

Tobacco use is the major cause of preventable death and disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States tobacco use is responsible for about one in five deaths annually, or about 443,000 deaths per year. Deaths by tobacco use are more than all deaths related to alcohol, car accidents, illegal drugs, homicide, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and suicide, combined. “It’s about protecting the health of our employees, our most valuable resource,” said David. “As a healthcare leader in our communities, it’s important for North Country to be the role model for others when it comes to healthy lifestyles. We’re about creating healthier communities; it’s the right thing to do.”

On February 9th, 2013 North Country HealthCare will be publicly recognized at the 4th Annual Health Leadership Award Ceremony for the critical role and their unyielding commitment to the establishment, promotion and support of a tobacco-free work place.

North Country HealthCare started as the Flagstaff Community Free Clinic in 1991. It was run by a small group of volunteer providers, health and human service representatives and consumers. In 1996, the clinic transitioned from a volunteer organization to a federally funded community health center. Since then, North Country HealthCare has become a medical home to over 40,000 patients in 13 communities across northern Arizona and has grown to employ over 400 people in the region.

February is National SBHC Awareness Month

February is National School-Based Healthcare Awareness Month when communities across the nation celebrate SBHCs. SBHCs are on the front lines tackling some of the most costly and important current healthcare issues for kids and teens – such as obesity, asthma, ADHD, and identifying and treating mental health issues (with special attention on violence prevention). Data show that SBHCs reduce inappropriate emergency room use, decrease absenteeism, and reduce tardiness by ensuring young people have access to quality, coordinated healthcare.

North Country HealthCare’s SBHC is redefining health for kids and teens in our community by providing access to quality, comprehensive, culturally sensitive healthcare in a location where students are – schools. We are proud to be a part of this national movement and we hope you will join us as a first-hand witness to the impact of SBHCs right here in Flagstaff, AZ.
